A pay calculator that shows its working.
aupaycalculator.com is a free set of Australian pay, tax and superannuation calculators. Every figure it uses is published on the methodology page with its ATO or Fair Work source and the date it was last checked, and every headline number on the site is pinned by an automated test suite.
Why it exists
Most Australian pay calculators give you a number and no way to check it. You can't see which financial year's rates were used, whether the Low Income Tax Offset was applied, whether salary sacrifice was handled correctly for HECS, or when the figures were last updated. When the number is the difference between accepting a job and not, that's not good enough.
This site takes the opposite approach: the method is published, the sources are linked, the assumptions are stated on the page rather than buried, and the arithmetic is reproducible by hand from what's shown.
What it does well
- Handles the details others skip. The Medicare levy shade-in for low incomes, the LITO taper, the HECS add-back that makes salary sacrifice roughly neutral for student loans, the maximum super contribution base, and the difference between "salary + super" and "package including super".
- Multiple financial years. Prior years stay selectable so you can check a past return.
- Works backwards. The net-to-gross calculator starts from the take-home pay you want and solves for the salary you need — useful before a negotiation, and rare among Australian tools.
- Runs on your device. Your salary is never sent anywhere. See privacy.
What it deliberately doesn't do
Being clear about the limits matters as much as the features:
- It doesn't calculate award rates. Modern award classifications, penalty rates and overtime are not modelled. For award entitlements use the Fair Work Ombudsman's tools.
- It doesn't replicate PAYG withholding tables. We compute the annual tax position; your payslip uses the ATO's per-period tables and will differ slightly.
- It doesn't give advice. Nothing here is financial, tax or legal advice, and it can't account for your circumstances.
- It doesn't collect your data. There's no account, no login, and no salary data leaves your browser.
Who maintains it
This site is built and maintained by Silvano Para, an independent developer working on web and SEO projects. You can reach me directly at silvanopara@gmail.com — corrections especially welcome.
To be explicit about what that does and doesn't mean: I am not a registered tax agent, accountant or financial adviser, and nothing on this site has professional sign-off. What it does have is a published method, primary ATO and Fair Work sources for every figure, and an automated test suite of 329 assertions that pins every number shown on every page. Treat the output as a well-documented estimate, not as advice — and if a figure matters to a decision you're making, check it against the ATO or a registered agent.
How it's funded
As at 15 August 2026 the site carries no advertising, no affiliate links and no sponsored content, and there is no commercial relationship with any product or company mentioned on it. It costs very little to run and is not currently monetised. If that changes, this page and the editorial policy will be updated before the change goes live, and any affected page will carry a visible disclosure.
